Satyamev Jayate 2 Episode 5: Rise above petty gains, vote for India

New Delhi: The last episode of the second season of 'Satyamev Jayate', which went on air earlier this month, will be aired today. Aamir Khan who raised important issues such as the spurt in the number of atrocities against women, Indian police system, importance of waste management in the current season, will bring forth another crucial topic - the importance of the right to vote.
In the last episode, Aamir Khan not only focused on the criminal records of the politicians, but also showed how the commoners display no apprehensions in demanding money for their votes.
Yes, while there is a section of voters that think their votes don't matter, there's another group of voters that willingly sells their votes for TV sets, money and refrigerator.

Aamir Khan puts forth India’s current political scenario in the season finale episode

Aamir ‘social crusader’ Khan highlighted some of the most important facts in the season finale episode of Satyamev Jayate 2

Satyamev Jayate 2 went on air earlier this month and in the past 4 episodes, Aamir Khan raised important issues such as the spurt in the number of atrocities against women, Indian police system, importance of waste management and one of the biggest issues of India – corruption. In the season finale episode, which was aired today (March 30), Aamir put forth the country’s current political scenario, which will help every Indian to cast their vote for the right candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
With the able help of statistics, data and thorough research Khan showed us how out of 543 Lok Sabha MPs (Members of Parliament) and 4032 MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly), 30% (162 in number) and 31% (1264 in number) have criminal cases pending against them respectively. And they treat criminal records and unlawful cases as their achievements. On the other hand, regardless of their criminal records, political parties show no qualms in accepting their nomination papers.
Aamir invited Bitiya’s father, who spoke about Raghuraj Pratap Singh also known as Raja Bhaiya (MLA from Kunda, Uttar Pradesh and Minister of Food and Civil Supplies) immoral behaviour. Bitiya, as the show shows, was assaulted and murdered by Raja Bhaiya. And we did our own little search on Raja, after which we found that UP Police has more than 45 criminal cases of extortion, murder, kidnapping among others against him. He is also said to be involved in many illegal trading activities such as those relating to sand mining from the riverside.
Followers of Ajit Sarkar, member of Bihar Legislative Assembly for Purnea constituency, also remembered him for his benevolence. Ajit was gunned down in Purnia. In 1999, Pappu Yadav was arrested for his murder, who released from jail last year.
The prominent highlight of the show was the presence of Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi, India’s former Chief Election Commissioner. Quraishi revealed that the political parties use funeral vans to hide money meant for voters. He also said that phony weddings are planned sans the groom/bride to arrange free meal for voters.
It was also revealed how the politicos cash in on their negative image to create fear and maintain their ‘market value’. But it’s not only the politicians, who are to be blamed. Voters demand cash, mobile phone, TV set, refrigerator to cast their votes for particular candidates. And it’s not only people from low income groups sell their votes. Middle income groups too show no qualms. As they rightly say in Hindi, “taali ek haath se nahi bajti.”

latest episode

After fighting against crucial and grave issues like female feoticide, plight of rape victims and child abuse, this week Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan highlighted the scams that are plaguing our country. During the fourth episode of his TV show Satyamev Jayate 2, Aamir brought forth some facts as to how black money has spoiled the growth of our country at every stage. He also urged the youth to fight against corruption through his show.

Wealth of the nation: Currently, corruption and scams are one of the biggest problems that our country is fighting. From Coalgate to Common Wealth Games, India has witnessed a series of scams in the last few years. The money of the common man is involved in some way or the other in such scams. The actor with the help of statistics, data and a brilliant research showed how these malpractices can be fought at a personal level and at society level too. It also highlighted how despite of being rich in resources, majority of our country's population is poor.

How RTI is beneficial: One of the highlights during the episode was the importance of the RTI (Right to Information). Right to Information is a basic right of the citizens of this country. Unfortunately, most of us aren't aware of it. To shed more light on the topic Aamir welcomed prominent guest Shankar Singh of Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan. Shankar Singh stressed upon the impact of an RTI application that can be filed by any Indian citizen. He also said that if there is any delay in the response from the government official it will amount to a penalty of Rs. 250 per day. He also mentioned how Government plans are only subjected to papers and are never implemented in real-life. He ended the conversation with a few beautiful lines which stated the supremacy of the RTI, "Kaagaz mein sab kuch hain, kaagaz mein puri sarkar hain. Kaagaz se he chalti hai. Kaagaz bina kuch hai hee nahi.”

Importance of Public Services Grievances Bill and social audits: One of the other important tools to fight corruption are Public Services Grievances Bill and Social audit. Public Services Grievances Bill is an extension of the RTI which ensures that complaints are heard and acted upon. Aamir also welcomed another guest Somwya Kidambi of Society for Social Audits, accountability and transparency. Somwya encouraged the youth and said that there is still hope and all is not lost. She explained that though in a small way but today the youth is coming forward and is actively participating to fight against corruption. She further explained that social audits have helped fight against scams and corruption in many ways. She said nearly 3000 corrupt government officials have been terminated from their services and nearly 5000 disciplinary actions including suspension have taken against those who were found corrupt.
Eternal vigilance is the price of democracy: The story of Kerala Panchayati Raj was really motivating. The Kerala Panchayati Raj empowers each citizen of that region to decide the best use of Government funds in their Panchayat. One of the other guests on the show was social activist Aruna Roy who is hopeful that the youth of our country can bring a positive change to society. The fourth episode of the show was really an eye opener as it forced citizens to rethink on many issues. Aamir through this episode said that it should be our fundamental duty to correct the government when it is at fault. Aamir ended the show by saying that eternal vigilance is the price of democracy and instead of blaming the system, why don't we make the effort to make the system better. This can be done by the appropriate use of our valuable votes.

3RD EPISODE :- DONT WASTE THE GARBAGE

SO HAVE UR PARENTS HAVE DONE THE HOMEWORK GIVEN BY AMIR KHAN SO BE READY TO KNOW THE HOMEWORK ON THIS SUNDAY ..............................................WITH ME AND AMIR KHAN

1,60,000 metric tons—that is the amount of garbage India generates every year! That's about 1.5 tons of waste per head per month! Most of this is wet waste, which can be used to produce fertilizer and generate electricity. Instead, huge mounds of it lie piled up in our cities and villages, posing a serious threat to public health and the environment. Disease and toxins fly in the air and leach into the water and the ground, triggering ailments ranging from cholera and asthma to more serious problems affecting the brain and other organs.
In this episode we bring you solutions. Some are simple ways to treat waste in our homes, so that we may reuse, recycle and revive the earth. While we must reduce our waste footprint, we must also put pressure on local authorities, especially at the municipal level, to ensure responsible waste management. We must demand that they set up effective mechanisms for the collection, segregation and treatment of solid waste.
With rapid urbanization and incessant population growth, the amount of garbage India produces is only going to grow. Let us stop pinching our noses and shutting our eyes to the garbage around us. We are the ones producing it so it's up to us to ensure that it gets the right treatment, so we are able to get the good out of it, just like any other productive resource.

Creating energy from waste

Dr Sharad Kale’s Nisargruna biogas technology has been used by many organizations to set up over 160 biogas plants. Sampurn(e)arth, one organization in Mumbai, tells us more
What are the requirements to set up a biogas plant?
  • Land along with 3 phase power supply and water supply.
  • Segregation of waste at source to ensure only the organic portion is sent to the plant.
  • Scope for usage of the gas.
  • Capital investment (that usually pays off in 1 to 5 years).
How much waste is needed for the plant?
The plant is best suited for processing bulk quantities of waste, ranging from 100 kg to 30,000 kg per day. Multiple plants of these capacities can be set up to process an even larger quantity. Biogas plants have been set up at many educational institutes, industrial and corporate campuses, and hospitals and residential complexes. Several municipalities have also installed them for processing market or agricultural waste.
What types of waste can be processed by this technology?
There are many types:
  • Food and garden waste
  • Offerings made at religious places
  • Biodegradable municipal solid waste
  • Waste from fisheries and slaughterhouses
  • Biomass generated from sewage plants
What has been your experience with using the Nisargruna biogas technology?
It has been pretty good so far. It has helped us do our bit in solving the mammoth problem of solid waste management in a sustainable, economically viable and eco-friendly manner. It has saved emissions of greenhouse gases from dumping grounds and those during transportation of waste to dumping grounds.
The biogas plants have also enabled the institutions that have installed them to generate methane gas and nutrient-rich, weed-free manure. More institutions are gradually recognizing the value and possible uses of such gas—for cooking (by replacing LPG), for the generation of electricity, and by bottling into large cylinders for use in industries or vehicles.
Moreover, the technology is quite easy to operate and therefore can generate employment for the marginalized sections of society, such as the thousands of women waste pickers who we believe are the invisible environmentalists of this country.

adable materials such as paper and plastic waste are segregated and resold by the college.various types of waste every day. For instance, a medical college discards used syringes and cotton swabs, apart from creating paper, plastic and food waste. Whatever the waste may be, some colleges have shown that segregation, recycling and reusing can result in effective waste management.

In 2008, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, started its solid waste management programme with the aim of ‘throwing nothing away’. “We started this programme as a small initiative to keep our institute and campus as environmentally friendly as possible,” says Dr Sunil Chandy, director of the college.
All the waste from the campus’s hospital, college and hostel is collected and segregated into wet, dry and plastic waste. Biodegradable materials such as fruit peels and tea and coffee grains are converted into manure in compost pits. Non-biodegr

Besides this, cow dung from the campus’ cattle shed is converted into biogas in the college’s biogas digester and used to fire stoves in the canteen. Food waste from this shed is decomposed in a unit by earthworms and the waste generated by the worms is dried, packed and sold as vermicompost, a valuable organic fertilizer. This waste management model, which employs 200 workers today, has been so effective that the college get back 40% of its investment cost from the recycling of waste itself.
A similar waste management model is in place at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. A biogas plant with a capacity of 500 kg converts kitchen waste into biogas and since 2011, it has saved the institute close to 4,000 kg of LPG. The flora on the campus also benefits from the organic fertilizer that is produced by a vermicompost unit and all recyclable waste is sent to recyclers through a waste pickers' savings group that comprises more than 1,500 workers.
Besides CMC and TISS, other universities too have taken steps towards making their campuses environment-friendly. For instance, Major Shiv Kiran who started the campaign at the University of Hyderabad says, “We convert around 3–3.5 tonnes of waste into resources every day. Most of this consists of food remains, which are composted. We have not needed to install a biogas plant since all our internal needs have been taken care of through simpler ways.”
Similarly, the University of Pune has adopted simple methods like setting up compost pits within the campus. They are managed by waste pickers working with the organization SWaCH, who also segregate wet waste from dry waste and sell dry recyclables to scrap dealers. This becomes a valuable addition to their income. The Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha in Pune has also ensured that only a minimal amount of waste goes to the city’s dumping yard. The canteen and campus streetlights run on the biogas created in the biogas plant, while the gardens are well maintained with manure from the compost pits.

These institutions show that it is possible to reduce the amount of waste generated by them. They can show the way for others across the country.

SATYAMEV JAYATE 2 EPISODE 2

Satyamev Jayate Season 2 Episode: How to make the police force people friendly

Aamir khan is back with his issue based show 'Satyamev Jayate' which had created a stir in the society with its first episode. In more ways than one, each of the episodes stirred the inner conscience among many of us.
The First Episode featured the pertinent issue of sexual crime against women. In the last season, the show spoke about several important issues that plague the society- like female foeticide, dowry death, child sexual abuse.
This time Aamir Khan will talk about the police system in the country.

The Shocking State Of Police Chowkies

Did you know that only 150 litres of diesel is rationed to some police stations every month to handle every crime that comes their way? Or that stations are often the biggest defaulters because they never have enough money to pay theirelectricty bills? Aamir introduced us to IPS officer Abhinav Kumar who spoke of the constant shortages of manpower, fuel and even stationery at outposts that lead officers to use their influence to keep their stations up and running after government rationed supplies run out. Aamir also mentioned that while working on 'Sarfarosh', he met a few officers who told him that the constables themselves had to arrange from their own pockets for water while handling a dead body or taking an accused to the court for a hearing.

The Crippling Effect Of Corrupt Politicians

As is well known, the police-politician nexus has corrupted  the force because of the sheer influence those in power exert over postings and promotions. While a Supreme Court appointed  committee had directed states to create an independent body that would decide on ranks among the forces, it was met with non-compliance from irritated netas, among whom one chief minister even wondered aloud about what good it was getting elected if he couldn't decide how officers would be posted and promoted.

The Constant Misery Of The Constabulary

Constables or pandus make up for a staggering 92% of the force but the inhuman conditions they live and work in, coupled with bleak career prospects make it a job that's hard to be sincere at. While Aamir did argue that a large number of constables collect bribes, it was explained that the money collected filled the pockets of their seniors more often than not.

 Parallels With The British Force

Aamir spoke withSir Peter  Fahy, theCheif of police  in Manchester, United Kingdom about how officers rise in the ranks. Fahy explained that every officer began as a constable to ensure that there was greater understanding of the community they lived in and serviced. This is starkly different when compared to India where there are four different entry levels to the police thus leading to a divided force, where one group will always feel superior or inferior to the other. A plea was made to regularise the system so that all officers gained an equal chance to thrive within the system.

The show finally ended with a soulful song sung by Ram Sampath called 'Dhoondta Hai Mann Mera'

Over a year after Nirbhaya, women across various age groups continue to be targets of sexual violence.

Women face lots of questions in court or hospitals

RAPE VICTIM FACE 4 PROBLEMS

1ST - STATE POLICE APATHY,
2ND - DOCTOR THINKS THAT VICTIM IS ONLY EVIDENCE
3RD- THE RE-RAPE IN COURT OR LATE JUSTICE
4TH - BREAKING DOWN SOCIETAL PREJUDICE

THE STATE POLICE

Aamir highlighted the indifference shown towards victims and their families by police officers  who are meant to enforce justice but instead shame and ridicule them. Aamir even interviewed the parents of a girl who committed suicide after being humiliated by officers. Some important information was also shared with viewers about the rights they can exercise against an officer who refuses to file an FIR (such as registering a case against the officer under Section 166A of the Indian Penal Code).

DOCTOR THINKS THAT VICTIM IS ONLY EVIDENCE

The show examined the difficulty of a rape victim goes through during every step  she takes following assault. The next segment examined the kind of horrors a rape victim faces at hospitals where she is discouraged by doctors to take up the case and subjected to the humiliating and illegal two finger test. Aamir also interviewed a doctor and activist working to standardize the process doctors must follow when examining a rape victim.

A quick guide on what to do the medical examination for a rape victim

THE RE-RAPE IN COURT OR LATE JUSTICE

The 3rd problem of victim show exposed the kind of-treatment   meted out by courts and lawyers to victims. Horrific instances were highlighted, one being where a victim's undergarments were openly displayed in the middle of the courtroom. Aamir interviewed a woman who'd been fighting to have her case heard for over 21 years, despite having shown diligence in collecting every bit of evidence possible. The segment also featured a short interview with retired judge Usha Mehra, whose report had proposed the establishment of a one stop rape crisis centre that would facilitate speedy trials.

BREAKING DOWN SOCIETAL PREJUDICE

Aamir then went on to highlight the kind of prejudice we label rape victims with as a society. The ,reserch on rape victims showed that the maximum number of crimes happened to women when they were wearing saris or burqas, banishing the myth that the victim might have lured her attacker with provocative dressing. Research also showed that no age group was spared, with victims ranging from the ages of 2-93.

Showcasing The Spirit Of Survivors

The stories of rape survivors were celebrated with two women, Suzette Jordan (park street), Kolkata) and Urmila Singh Bharti (Madhya Pradesh), sharing their experiences on the show. The women admitted to being ostracized, abused, humiliated and bogged down by the system and society they lived in, but their spirit shined through at the end of the day and they are now working to help other victims fight their cases.
